In August of 1992 LTC published Application Note 49, “Illumination Circuitry for Liquid Crystal Displays.” One notable aspect of this event is that it generated more response than all previous LTC application notes combined. This level of interest, along with significant performance advances since AN-49’s appearance, justifies further discussion of LCD backlighting circuitry.

It was proposed that perfect invisibility cloaks can be constructed for hiding objects from electromagnetic Illumination (Pendry et al., Science 312, p. 1780). The cylindrical cloaks experimentally demonstrated (Schurig et al., Science 314, p. 997) and theoretically proposed (Cai et al., Nat. Photon. 1, p. 224) have however simplified material parameters in order to facilitate easier realization as well as to avoid infinities in optical constants. Here we show that the cylindrical cloaks with simplified material parameters inherently allow the zeroth-order cylindrical wave to pass through the cloak as if the cloak is made of a homogeneous isotropic medium, and thus visible. To all high-order cylindrical waves, our numerical simulation suggests that the simplified cloak inherits some properties of the ideal cloak, but finite scatterings exist.

Visible light communications (VLC) is the name given to an optical wireless communication system that carries information by modulating light in the visible spectrum (400–700 nm) that is principally used for Illumination [1–3]. The communications signal is encoded on top of the Illumination light. Interest in VLC has grown rapidly with the growth of high power light emitting diodes (LEDs) in the visible spectrum. The motivation to use the Illumination light for communication is to save energy by exploiting the Illumination to carry information and, at the same time, to use technology that is “green” in comparison to radio frequency (RF) technology, while using the existing infrastructure of the lighting system.
