MPI stands for the Message Passing Interface. Written by the MPI Forum (a large committee comprising of a cross-section between industry and research representatives), MPI is a standardized API typically used for parallel and/or distributed computing. The MPI standard is comprised of 2 documents: MPI-1 (published in 1994) and MPI-2 (published in 1996). MPI-2 is, for the most part, additions and extensions to the original MPI-1 specification. The MPI-1 and MPI-2 documents can be downloaded from the official MPI Forum web site: http://www.mpi-forum.org/. Open MPI is an open source, freely available implementation of both the MPI-1 and MPI-2 documents. The Open MPI software achieves high performance the Open MPI project is quite receptive to community input.

For a programming language, Fortran has been around a long time. It was one of the first widely used 鈥渉igh-level鈥?languages, as well as the first programming language to be standardized. It is still the premier language for scientific and engineering computing applications. The purpose of this handbook is to describe the latest version of this language, Fortran 90. This chapter gives some history of the development and standardization of Fortran and describes the notation used to specify the syntax of Fortran 90.

LTE-Advanced becomes a truly global standard for 4G cellular communications. Relay, as one of the key technologies of LTE-Advanced, can significantly extend the coverage, and improve the system throughput. LTE-A standards and tech- nologies were described in several recent books where the limited pages for relay feature prevent the detailed explanations of the technology. In this book, we tried to provide an in-depth description of LTE-A relay development. More specifically, significant portions are spent on relay channel modeling and potential technologies during the study item phase of the development, although some of those tech- nologies, such as Type 2 cooperative relay, multi-hop relay, relay with backhaul of carrier aggregation, were not standardized in Release 10 LTE.
