As logic systems get larger and more complex, theirsupply current requirements continue to rise. Systemsrequiring 100A are fairly common. A high current powersupply to meet such requirements usually requires parallelingseveral power regulators to alleviate the thermalstress on the individual power components. A powersupply designer is left with the choice of how to drive theseparalleled regulators: brute-force single-Phase or smartPolyPhaseTM.

The Maxim Integrated 71M6541-DB REV 3.0 Demo Board is a demonstration board for evaluating the 71M6541 device for single-Phase electronic energy metering applications in conjunction with the Remote Sensor Inter-face. It incorporates a 71M6541 integrated circuit, a 71M6601 Remote Interface IC, peripheral circuitry such as a serial EEPROM, emulator port, and on-board power supply. A serial to USB converter allows communication to a PC through a USB port. The Demo Board allows the evaluation of the 71M6541 energy meter chip for measurement accuracy and overall system use.

The Hilbert Transform is an important component in communication systems, e.g. for single sideband modulation/demodulation, amplitude and phase detection, etc. It can be formulated as filtering operation which makes it possible to approximate the Hilbert Transform with a digital filter. Due to the non-causal and infinite impulse response of that filter, it is not that easy to get a good approximation with low hardware resource usage. Therefore, different filters with different complexities have been implemented. The detailed discussion can be found in "Digital Hilbert Transformers or FPGA-based Phase-Locked Loops" (http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/freeabs_all.jsp?arnumber=4629940). The design is fully pipelined for maximum throughput.

Portable, battery-powered operation of electronic apparatushas become increasingly desirable. Medical, remotedata acquisition, power monitoring and other applicationsare good candidates for battery operation. In some circumstances,due to space, power or reliability considerations,it is preferable to operate the circuitry from a single 1.5Vcell. Unfortunately, a 1.5V supply eliminates almost alllinear ICs as design candidates. In fact, the LM10 opamp-reference and the LT®1017/LT1018 comparators arethe only IC gain blocks fully specifi ed for 1.5V operation.Further complications are presented by the 600mV dropof silicon transistors and diodes. This limitation consumesa substantial portion of available supply range, makingcircuit design diffi cult. Additionally, any circuit designedfor 1.5V operation must function at end-of-life batteryvoltage, typically 1.3V. (See Box Section, “Componentsfor 1.5V Operation.”)
