The fi rst edition of this book came about because Regina Lundgren had always been
fascinated with communication. She started writing novels in the third grade. When she
was asked on her fi rst day at the University of Washington what she hoped to do with her
degree in scientifi c and technical communication, she replied, “I want to write environ-
mental impact statements.” When Patricia Clark hired her to work at the Pacifi c Northwest
National Laboratory to do just that, she was overjoyed.
With the proliferation of cloud computing and Internet online services, more and
more data and computation are migrated to geographical distributed Internet data
centers (IDCs), which can provide reliability, management, and cost benefits.
However, IDC operators encounter several major problems in IDC operations, such
as huge energy consumption and energy cost, and high carbon emission. To deal
with the above problems, IDC operators have to efficiently manage the way of
energy consumption and energy supply. Considering the potential of smart grid, we
focus on the energy management of IDCs in smart grid from several perspectives,
i.e., power outage, carbon emission, heterogeneous service delay guarantees, and
operation risk.
This book is based on a Ph.D. research that has been conducted at the Delft
University of Technology in the Netherlands in collaboration with Dutch Electricity
& Gas Distribution Network Operator, Stedin. This book was written as a result of
wider interest that was shown by different industry groups on this topic after its
public defence. This inspired the author to modify and publish a practical version
of the research for a greater international audience. Therefore, the content of this
book is intended for a double audience, on the one hand for those interested in the
organisational and management aspects of maintenance.
