Introduction ? ? The ARM Cortex -A8 microprocessor is the first applications microprocessor in ARM!ˉs new Cortex family. With high performance and power efficiency, it targets a wide variety of mobile and consumer applications including mobile phones, set-top boxes, gaming consoles and automotive navigation/entertainment systems. The Cortex-A8 processor spans a range of performance points depending on the implementation, delivering over to 2000 Dhrystone MIPS (DMIPS) of performance for demanding consumer applications and consuming less than 300mW for low-power mobile devices. This translates into a large increase in processing capability while staying with the power levels of previous generations of mobile devices. Consumer applications will benefit from the reduced heat dissipation and resulting lower packaging and integration costs.

The TJA1040 is an advanced high speed CAN transceiver for use in automotive and general industrial applications. It supports the differential bus signal representation described in the international standard for in-vehicle high speed CAN applications (ISO11898). CAN (Controller Area Network) is the standard protocol for serial in-vehicle bus communication, particularly for Engine Management and Body Multiplexing. A major societal challenge for the decades to come will be the delivery of effective medical services while at the same time curbing the growing cost of healthcare. The compact hearing aid devices and current pacemakers are good examples of how CMOS ICs bring about these new functionalities and services in the medical field. Apart from these existing applications, many researchers are trying to develop new bio-medical solutions such as Artificial Retina, Deep Brain Stimulation, and Wearable Healthcare Systems. These are possible by combining the recent advances of bio-medical technology with low power CMOS IC technology.

District energy (DE) systems use central heating and/or cooling facilities to provide heating and/or cooling services for communities. The advantages of district energy over conventional heating and cooling include improved efficiency, reliability and safety, reduced environmental impact, and for many situations better economics. DE systems can be particularly beneficial when integrated with cogeneration plants for electricity and heat, i.e., with combined heat and power (CHP) plants. One of the main impediments to increased use of cogeneration-based district energy is a lack of understanding of the behavior of integrated forms of such systems. The basic topic of this book is solving problems from system and control theory using convex optimization. We show that a wide variety of problems arising in system and control theory can be reduced to a handful of standard convex and quasiconvex optimization problems that involve matrix inequalities. For a few special cases there are “analytic solutions” to these problems, but our main point is that they can be solved numerically in all cases. These standard problems can be solved in polynomial- time (by, e.g., the ellipsoid algorithm of Shor, Nemirovskii, and Yudin), and so are tractable, at least in a theoretical sense. Recently developed interior-point methods for these standard problems have been found to be extremely efficient in practice. Therefore, we consider the original problems from system and control theory as solved.

This paper presents a new type of electromagnetic damper with rotating inertial mass that has been devel oped to control the vibrations of structures subjected to earthquakes. The electromagnetic inertial mass damper (EIMD) consists of a ball screw that converts axial oscillation of the rod end into rotational motion of the internal flflywheel and an electric generator that is turned by the rotation of the inner rod. The EIMD is able to generate a large inertial force created by the rotating flflywheel and a variable damping force devel oped by the electric generator. Device performance tests of reduced-scale and full-scale EIMDs were under taken to verify the basic characteristics of the damper and the validity of the derived theoretical formulae. Shaking table tests of a three-story structure with EIMDs and earthquake response analyses of a building with EIMDs were conducted to demonstrate the seismic response control performance of the EIMD. The EIMD is able to reduce story drifts as well as accelerations and surpasses conventional types of dampers in reducing acceleration responses.
