The purpose of this project is to explore the issues and implementation of a multiple instruction stream, single data stream processor. We are running two instruction streams on two CPUs which share an address space. The processors share a second level cache, and maintain coherence at the L1 cache with a write-invalidate policy. The L2 cache is two-way set associative, with a block size of 8 words, and a total capacity of 512 words.

In engineering, compensation is planning for side effects or other unintended issues in a design. The design of an invention can itself also be to compensate for some other existing issue or exception. One example is in a voltage-controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO), which is normally affected not only by voltage, but to a lesser extent by temperature. A temperature-compensated version (a TCVCXO) is designed so that heat buildup within the enclosure of a transmitter or other such device will not alter the piezoelectric effect, thereby causing frequency drift. Another example is motion compensation on digital cameras and video cameras, which keep a picture steady and not blurry.

This article discusses some issues that a typical Windows C++ programmer will encounter when approaching Symbian OS for the first time. Our experience in developing for three successive versions of Symbian OS has given us considerable perspective on what can be difficult when working in this otherwise rich and stable environment. While one reason for Symbian s success may be the desire of many mobile phone manufacturers not to be tied to Microsoft, the other reason is that Symbian has put together a lightweight, elegant system that succeeds in providing a very impressive range of functionality. Here are some pointers to help ease the transition to successful Symbian OS application development.
