The kernel-ica package is a Matlab program that implements the Kernel ICA algorithm for independent component analysis (ICA). The Kernel ICA algorithm is based on the minimization of a contrast function based on kernel ideas. A contrast function measures the statistical dependence between components, thus when applied to estimated components and minimized over possible demixing matrices, components that are as independent as possible are found.

多年來，我一直想錄找一本適合中國計算機系學生用的算法方面的國外教材。盡管有些不錯的國外教材在中國出版，但總有篇幅過多、內容略顯陳舊或數據結構內容夾雜其中等等這樣或那樣的不甚滿意之處。 去年我有幸看到世界科學圖書出版社出版的由M．H．Alsuwaiyel撰寫的《Algorithms Design Techniques and Analysis》，它是以國際著名算法專家，我國臺灣出身的李德財教授所主編的系列叢書——Lecture Notes Series on Computing——中的一本。雖然此書不是美國的大學教材，而是沙特阿拉伯的大學計算機系教材。但是我很快就被該書的組織簡明、概括，且包含當前市面上算法一＃較少涉及的概率算法和近似算法

Recent advances in experimental methods have resulted in the generation of enormous volumes of data across the life sciences. Hence clustering and classification techniques that were once predominantly the domain of ecologists are now being used more widely. This book provides an overview of these important data analysis methods, from long-established statistical methods to more recent machine learning techniques. It aims to provide a framework that will enable the reader to recognise the assumptions and constraints that are implicit in all such techniques. Important generic issues are discussed first and then the major families of algorithms are described. Throughout the focus is on explanation and understanding and readers are directed to other resources that provide additional mathematical rigour when it is required. Examples taken from across the whole of biology, including bioinformatics, are provided throughout the book to illustrate the key concepts and each technique’s potential.

With the advent of multimedia, digital signal processing (DSP) of sound has emerged from the shadow of bandwidth-limited speech processing. Today, the main appli- cations of audio DSP are high quality audio coding and the digital generation and manipulation of music signals. They share common research topics including percep- tual measurement techniques and analysis/synthesis methods. Smaller but nonetheless very important topics are hearing aids using signal processing technology and hardware architectures for digital signal processing of audio. In all these areas the last decade has seen a significant amount of application oriented research.
